Kassiopi

Kassiopi is on the North coast of Corfu, only about 10 nautical miles from Gouvia. We arrived yesterday afternoon we had contemplated carrying on to another group of islands at the top of Corfu but, decided against it as we wanted a night on terra firma.

We managed to moor up on the quay without too much difficulty although it is very shallow about 2m, we draw 1.9 so, we were holding our breathes as we came in. Some other Brits were also coming in at the same time as us. The harbour is quite small and quaint but when you go for a walk around it is touristville with a capital T.

It wasn’t long before a load of tripper boats came in dropping off and picking up people. We and Brits next door kept a close eye on our anchors as it was an anchor crossing situation just waiting to happen. Unbelievably when they left our anchors were all still in tact!

We went for a swim and wander and yes we are in a mini Kavos complete with English breakfast (with black pudding) and a Chinese restaurant (I know that’s not British, but you know what I mean).

After a dinner on the boat of bread, pate, tomato, vine leaves and beer (our new staple diet). We sat and watched as the tripper boats all returned, four in all. Two of them we thought laid their anchors over ours (it all gets very territorial).

There was some very heavy rain this morning. This meant tripper boats didn’t go out. The Brits next door set off and low and behold their anchor was caught under one of the boats. After a bit of shouting, two of them diving down, one on the anchor, one holding her steady, they managed to get the anchor up and set off.

It was at this point that Miles said it might be prudent to go and have a look at our anchor before setting off to leave. They had 4 people to get themselves sorted we are only 2, well 1 and a 1/2 really (can’t call me a whole one). There was lots of commotion in the small harbour, a small boat was trying to relay the anchor of one of the tripper boats, then another boat moved from one side of the quay to the other. The wind was getting up (what’s new) someone told us of storms coming, so the long and the short of it is we didn’t check the anchor and decided to stay another night. A boat came along side us and while he was checking his anchor he told us that ours was not crossed (what a nice man).

Miles did a bit of deep sea diving (well 1/2 m under prop) he had to put an anode on the propeller, thing is he didn’t have a snorkel so after trying to make a homemade one (which didn’t work) it was a case of holding his breath and going for it. I watched on helplessly wondering at which point I should jump in and pull him from under the boat. We now have anode in place and Captain Miles has been awarded Nemo status!

Love to you all Karen & Nemo XX
